    Melanie C. has been an icon since the 90s, when she became globally famous as part of the pop band Spice Girls.

    Now, after three decades, she has built an impressive solo career, releasing her own music, appearing as a judge Sound And dancing with the StarsDJ-ing, and more.

    When I meet her on Zoom on Monday afternoon — the Monday of the level 4 heatwave, when temperatures reach 40 degrees — she’s wearing her trademark Adidas (though shorts, not tracksuit bottoms) and a vest. Despite the record-breaking heat, she looks remarkably good.

    We’re meeting thanks to Booking.com – Melanie is an ambassador for the brand, which sponsors the Women’s Euro. She’s always been a fitness fan — she earned the moniker Sporty Spice for nothing — and is passionate about encouraging women of all ages, shapes, and sizes to adopt sports as part of their daily routine.

    Melanie C: “It’s ridiculous that we’re fighting to get the women’s sport recognized — but that’s changing.”

    As above, she’s been busy, appearing at Glastonbury last month to not only kick-start the festival with a packed-out DJ set on Thursday evenings, but also during the set for the Stockport-born indie band Blossom. also made guest appearances, covered Spice up your Life. “I don’t think it could have been any better – I liked it,” she smiles. “The whole experience from beginning to end was insane.”

    She shows that, like the Euro, there was a magic in the atmosphere, now we can participate in in-person events again post-Covid. “We’re getting things we’ve missed for so long — it’s such a positive feeling.”

    So, is she seeing the lioness? Of course he has. “They’re doing so incredibly well,” she shares, but laments that it’s “utterly disappointing” that athletes didn’t have more equal representation than now.

    “It’s funny that we’re fighting to get the women’s sport recognized as it should be, but it takes time,” she shares. “This year, we have such a great team. The coverage is phenomenal, isn’t it, and it’s awesome.”

    One of the things she enjoys during this tournament is the social media usage of the players. While there have been some negative and outdated comments on the JustEat ad lately, there has been a lot more coverage than in previous years, with the ten o’clock news being delayed for the first time to play this week’s quarter-finals. “We’re really getting to know the players as individuals,” Melanie continues, “they’re so fun, professional, and fabulous, and you can really feel the camaraderie.”

    So, why did it partner with Booking.com again? Largely because she loves football – and is clearly an advocate for women in the sport – but also because, in this tournament, matches are being held in smaller stadiums and arenas. “There are places on that list I’ve never been to, and it’s shining a light on ground places that wouldn’t normally be in the spotlight,” she reflects. “It means that young girls who don’t get the opportunity to travel to Wembley or Manchester get a chance to see these incredible women. It’s top notch, and I hope it inspires them and gets them there.” will show opportunities.”

    When we discuss the stats – a Booking.com survey found that 84% of the first football heroes of England fans were men, while 36% of whose heroes were women – Melanie shows that before we arrived, this was a ” There’s going to be a constant fight”. Even sexism in the playing field and in the game has been completely eradicated. “We’re making huge progress right now. Maybe that’s why women have always been held back — so they can’t handle it,” she laughs, smiling widely.

    So, does Melanie herself play football? Short answer: sometimes. “I am more of a spectator, especially as I get older,” she explains – although she shares that she used to kick when she was younger, a huge Liverpool fan her entire life. She has been to, and trained for a short period in, the Rockford Women’s Squad in the ’90s (which she describes as “really, really fun.”)

    To discuss how difficult it can be for young girls to get into sports sometimes – “I’ve always been a little jealous of men who can play football forever if they want to,” she shares . “But for women, it can be hard enough beyond school and during adolescence. We can become mindful of our bodies and begin to take less interest in sports.”

    That said, one of the highlights of the competition for her so far, is to see how inspired her 13-year-old daughter, Scarlett, is. “She’s into YouTube and TikTok and makeup, so when she said I’d go [to the Euro’s final]I was like, He’s different — but amazing.”

    What would she say to a woman who doesn’t feel confident enough to exercise? She will encourage them to move forward for their mental health as well as their physical health. “My own mental health issues are well documented and for me, exercise is a really important part of what keeps me mentally well,” she shares. Afraid of the gym? Try walking the dog, a class, or even wild swimming. “What’s important is trying to find that courage to try something new and do what works for you. My next thing to try is a Versa climate class.”

    Does he have a favorite player of the tournament? “I’ve got a little bit of a crush on Beth Mead at the moment, but they’re all really likable,” she shares.
