Public Service Announcement: It’s Done Hot, Kind of hot that makes it sticky, sweaty, and hard to sleep. You’ve probably tried counting sheep, wearing an eye mask, and even banned from social media scrolling for an hour before bedtime. But have you tried meditating to sleep?

A recent Headspace study found that only 7% of Brits believe they get a good night’s sleep every night, with 93 percent suffering from below-average closed eyes. Poor sleep can lead to irritability, concentration problems, and exhaustion—that’s where meditation pre-bed comes in.

The Mindful Method is known to reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, calm the mind, and more – making it the ideal companion to a restful night’s sleep. So much so, Beyoncé, Selena Gomez and Camila Cabello are said to be fans.

Eve Louise PrietoMeditation Director AT headspace, agreed, elaborating further that meditation can be a great way to ease yourself into a peaceful sleep because it is one of the best ways to reduce your stress levels. “Stress is really good for keeping us awake and meditation is a very effective way to help us manage and reduce stress,” she shares.

    What is meditation for sleep?

You’re probably aware of the benefits of meditation—but sleep meditation is an entirely different kettle of fish.

Meditation is broadly defined as deliberately taking time out of your day to train the mind to be more present. Sleep meditation, on the other hand, simply refers to using this same practice to experience more calm, clarity and contentment in your life just before bed, in turn improving the quality of your sleep, Lewis Prieto explains.

“Scientific research shows that practicing meditation and mindfulness regularly helps reduce stress and anxiety, which are some of the biggest causes of our sleep issues,” she tells WebMD.

How can meditation help you zzz easily?

Short answer: Because stress triggers your flight or fight response and the stress hormone cortisol, which keeps you awake and doesn’t allow your body to experience fatigue. “This alertness creates a busy mind and whatever is going on for you at the time – work, kids, the global pandemic and so on,” she shares.

Have you ever wondered why you feel more anxious once in bed? “The reality is that you are so busy all day long that you don’t pay that much attention to these thoughts. Once you lie down and do nothing, everything can escalate.”

So meditation helps because..? “Meditation and mindfulness teach you to create distance between yourself and those feelings, allowing for a vastness of mind for quality sleep,” explains Louise-Preto. It also gives you a space to understand the tendencies of the mind in more detail, aka learn how to let go of those worrying thoughts and calm and ground a tense body.

I’m new to meditation for sleep – HELP!

If you’re completely new to meditation, Louise-Preto suggests trying it earlier in the morning. Why? “It can be a helpful tool to get used to sitting with the mind,” she explains. The first thing you’ll notice if you start meditating is how busy the mind is – and how often you are distracted.

“The mind has always been – and always has been – busy and restless. Meditation gives us the awareness to see it more clearly and in turn calms it.”
