On the Covid front, many of us got our freedom back too. After several years of lockdown, we traveled again, saw friends and to a large extent life resumed as normal.
So, do we resume service as usual and go back to how it was pre-pandemic, or do we sweat it out instead?
We’ve got some exclusive data from Google on one of the most searched workouts and best fitness apps of the year (opens in new tab), Strava (opens in new tab), has today released its Year in Sport, a look back at the year’s top figures. So, how are you doing in 2022 and what’s changed from last year?

How we fared in 2022, according to new data
Fun fact for you: Over 100 million people use Strava to track their workouts, making it one of the most comprehensive and large-scale reports on how we workout ever.
So, what were the top trending workouts of the year, do you believe, and what does the sport look like for those living in the UK?
Interestingly, Monday shifted from the most popular workout day, with Tuesday taking the lead. This could be a result of new work-from-home norms, or a more relaxed, easier approach to the week for both productivity and health.
Running continued to thrive as the number of people committed to long-distance challenges grew. Fun fact about us for you Brits: Here, the number of marathon runners on Strava more than doubled (2022 compared to 2021, a 122% increase). Globally this number also grew, with 96% more people deciding to commit to the remote challenge.
It probably comes as no surprise that people who worked out together ran further and faster – according to Strava data, in the UK, people who ran together ran 21% longer and 15% faster than those who ran alone. Used to run more.
Cycling in pairs saw Britons ride 224% longer and 276% longer than when alone – more than double the global average.
Likewise, coming to work in a more active way, whether that’s walking, running or bicycling. In 2020 and 2021, many people turned to active commuting as a way to escape Covid – now, it seems, these healthy ways of moving are here to stay.
ground level? Running is here to stay, and long distance is on the rise. The “new normal” routines seem stuck—from active commuting to the freedom of trail running. And finally, what we missed most during lockdown – working with others and working abroad – is back with a bang, with 101% more activities uploaded away from home than last year Huh.
