    What is sleep meditation?

    According to yoga expert and educator Jennifer Piercy, sleep meditation is a type of meditation where you calm the mind and body to enter “yogic sleep.” It is a type of meditation by which you enter a trance-like state, completely relaxing and relaxing your body while your mind remains conscious.

    1. Leave your body loose and sit in a quiet place.

    2. Make a resolution for this meditation time so that you can feel satisfied. For example, do you want to feel well-rested, peaceful, happy or content? Do you want to focus less on chronic pain or do you want to stop overthinking? the possibilities are endless.

    3. Use your mind to visit all parts of your body – do a mental scan, as it were – to assess how you are feeling today and help them relax slowly. It will also help to make you aware of the parts of your body and the way they function.

    4. Breathe slowly and only through the nostrils if possible, as this helps you feel relaxed (our guide to breathing training can help).

    5. Visualize calm, pleasant scenes to balance any tension you may be feeling.

    Is sleep meditation a substitute for sleep?

    No – and it’s important to note that it shouldn’t be used as one. “Sleep meditation is not a substitute for sleep—they both have their own unique benefits,” Pearcy explains.

    That said, sleep meditation can have many benefits – helping to give your body enough rest to enable a good, restful, deep night’s sleep.
